1. They can’t get the money
Being able to obtain funds, both through revenue and investors, is essential for entrepreneurs trying to make it as self starters in the business world. If you can’t make the money, you can’t pay off the business expenses, employees or even yourself. Many entrepreneurs fail because they don’t know how to create a product, service or business that will be profitable enough to keep things running. Planning ahead and budgeting in this regard is very important
2. They don’t know the space
The phrase “know your audience” fits well here. You can’t just have a general idea of who you might be selling a product or service to and expect to be able to compete with everyone else operating in the same market as you are. You have to know who your potential customers are, what they want and what they need. You have to be aware of what other businesses who will eventually become your competition – or partners – are doing. Awareness of the space you are operating your business in is essential if you want to succeed as an entrepreneur.
3. They don’t have “soft” skills
Soft skills, otherwise known as people skills, are characteristics all entrepreneurs need to have in order to start and run successful businesses. These are attributes such as adaptability, the ability to work with other people in a team environment or group setting, and even basic problem solving skills. As an entrepreneur, you are going to run into all kinds of bumps in the road. You need to be able to navigate them on your own if you want your business to stay afloat.
4. They don’t write down a detailed plan
Creating a business plan should be one of the first steps an entrepreneur takes when he or she decides to launch a business of any kind. If you have no written plan, your business is pretty much guaranteed to fail. Starting with a plan does not just mean you have an end goal and you know how you are going to get there. You must also have plans in place for when things do not go the way you originally planned. Having everything written out ensures you always have a guide to follow even when things go wrong.
5. They can’t execute any plans they do manage to make
One thing an entrepreneur absolutely must be able to do as they are starting a business is learn to follow through with their plans. If you create a business plan, and you cannot actually make any part of that plan happen in real life, then you did not plan very well. This is why all entrepreneurs need to set realistic goals when formulating business plans. If you want to make it happen, first make sure you can feasibly make it happen before wasting precious time, money and resources.
6. They can’t rise above the competition
In any niche, space or market you enter as a business owner, you must understand that you are always going to have competition. These are businesses that are providing the same or similar products and/or services as you. Every day, hair salons compete for customers. There is not just one hair salon everyone goes to; there are thousands. Successful entrepreneurs know what they need to do in order to be able to rise above their competition. You are only going to fail if that is not something you and your business are able to do.
7. They can’t sell their products or services
When it comes to business, sales are everything. First of all, though, an entrepreneur needs to know how to create a product people actually need or want. If your product or service doesn’t solve some kind of problem that does not already have a relatively simple and well known solution, then you aren’t going to be able to sell it. Businesses set sales goals for a reason. If you cannot meet any kind of sales goal, your business is not going to be able to last very long.
8. They don’t put enough into their marketing efforts
Especially when it comes to brand new businesses, your marketing efforts as an entrepreneur can potentially make or break your business. Some entrepreneurs mistakenly think they do not need to put as much effort, time or money into marketing simply because they have a unique business model or are offering an innovative product that is one of a kind. Especially online, no one is going to come looking for the things you are offering. You need to not only be able to show them you exist, but you also need to persuade them to do business with you.
9. They expect too much
Many entrepreneurs end up failing because they set their expectations far too high. Not every new business is going to become well known and make millions upon millions of dollars. You are likely not going to become a billionaire because of your latest amazing business idea. If you set the bar too high for yourself and your business, it is going to become too difficult to meet your own expectations. Set the bar lower instead, so that you surprise and please yourself.
10. They give up too soon
Truthfully, the reason so many entrepreneurs fail simply because they give up too easily. Businesses, even good ones, take time to grow and develop. Just because one way of doing things in your business isn’t working does not mean you cannot try something different. Don’t give up before you have your shot at success.
Don’t be afraid to fail. Have a plan, know your potential customers, stand tall against your competition and prepare for great (but not unrealistic) success.
