Motivation is vital in all aspects of life – be it professional or personal. Motivation is what gives us that ‘get up and go’ to strive for bigger and better things. A lack of motivation makes us give up and ultimately not achieve our goals.
No matter whether you’re looking at motivating yourself, your team, your clients, or whoever, the following are reasons why we as human beings function better when we have reasons in our life that motivate us.
Identify a goal
Having a desire to either change something in your life or to become more successful is what creates goals. Once you’ve identified said goal it gives you something to work towards.
Interestingly, you can be motivated by both positive and negative factors. Perhaps you enjoy playing a sport, and would like to become better at it. This would be a positive factor. Or perhaps you’re unhappy with your weight, and want to trim down. This would be a negative factor.
But both are reasons why you want to reach your goal.
Prioritize to achieve
Once you’ve identified your goal, you need to prioritize what you need to do in order to reach that goal. For example, if you want to lose weight, you need to prioritize understanding and following a good diet, as well as how to easily incorporate exercise into your life.
Draw up an action plan
Now, it’s not strictly necessary to put things down in black and white. But doing so can be a huge motivation booster in itself. Drawing up a plan that you can look at on a daily basis – and you can mark down your steps that you’ve accomplished that lead you towards your goal – is an incredibly positive thing to do.
After all, the biggest motivator of all is actually seeing how you progress. Don’t underestimate how powerful a tool this can be.
Uh oh! There’s always going to be setbacks…
Listen up! Because nothing every truly worth achieving comes easy. You ARE going to suffer setbacks. And this is where you need to draw on the motivation you’ve worked hard to achieve. At times like this you might need to take a step backwards to re-introduce yourself to the motivation that got you striding along the path to your goal in the first place.
Stick with it
The main reason that people don’t achieve their goals is that they simply don’t have the staying power to see it through. In other words, they give up. But if you can keep your motivation high, then you can keep powering towards your end goal.
One thing that often happens (and actually, is a great motivator in itself), is to set a truly achievable small goal first of all. Then when you get there, a further goal can be aimed for. This is probably the best motivation booster of all – because we all like to feel that we’ve succeeded, and this stepwise approach allows us to reap our success and then move on to greater thing.
In a nutshell, motivation is so important because of the following:
- It provides us with a reason to change
- It gives us the ability to choose a goal
- It gives us something to focus on
- It gives us a reason not to give up our efforts
- It provides us with satisfaction along the way
- It gives our life meaning
- It gives us a sense of purpose
Motivation is important in all aspects of life. From work to personal goals (such as fitness and competition). Working on how to become motivated is an important step towards our success, so don’t underestimate how important it is.
