There are many reasons that you might be unhappy. But hey – did you know, you actually have the control to banish them from your life?
Now, we’re not talking true clinical depression, because if you’re suffering from that, then you need professional help. But there are many small things that might well have an effect on your happiness. And, happily, there really is something you can do about them…
Do you hold grudges?
Because if you do, you’re carrying around a whole load of negative energy. And for what? To make yourself feel bad? Cos, sugar – the only person it hurts is you…
For your own benefit you need to let the bitterness go. Let’s be honest here – the person who you’re holding the grudge for doesn’t give diddly squat that you feel that way. It doesn’t do anything to them – only to you, the one who’s hanging on to it. Time to forgive and forget – because it’s the only way you’ll move forward (and hey, if you can’t forgive, because sometimes that’s not possible, it’s more of ‘accept and move forwards’ – that’s just as good too…)
Are you pessimistic?
Hmmmm – now we’re not suggesting you should (or even could) change your personality. But if you always look on the black side of life, then this is what will fill your every moment. Instead, try to look for the brighter moments, the good people, the kind of stuff folk do every day that often goes by unnoticed.
Being pessimistic clouds your perception of everything in you life. So to begin the change, every morning when you wake up, think of 5 optimistic things. This will have the effect of putting a positive spin on your thoughts that’ll hopefully continue throughout the day…
Do you exercise?
No? Well, the power of exercise for a positive mindset is truly well understood. Exercise – even a tiny bit – produces natural hormones and endorphins within the body that make you feel fab.
So try to work a little bit of exercise into your daily regime. For example, get off the bus a couple of stops earlier and walk to work. Join up with a pal and go for a run during your lunch break. Get out in the garden at least a couple of times per week… There are many easy ways to incorporate exercise into your life in a fun way – even if you think you really hate it.
Is your diet bad?
Let’s face it, eating in a healthy manner whilst juggling a job/marriage/kids or whatever can be truly damn difficult. It’s all too easy to simply snack on candy and chips, or pick up too many take-outs on the way home from work.
But this can have a real detrimental effect on both your health and happiness.
So take a little time out to work out if this is affecting your happiness. Because if you think it is, then it’s time to do something about it. A few minutes spent per week planning what you’re going to eat for the next 7 days is time well spent. Believe us, a healthy eating plan really does have a massive effect on your levels of happiness…
Do you hang out with miserable people?
Because if you do, this WILL rub off on you. It’s said that we’re all the sum of the 5 people we spend the most time with. So if you take a proper look at yours, and you realize that they’re a true source of negativity, then you need to change your friends…
Are you drowning in debt?
If you are, then of course you’re unhappy. This is a truly frightening place to be, and too often it can seem as if there’s no way out.
THIS IS NOT TRUE! Because no matter how much you owe, there’s help out there. The first thing you need to do is make a conscious decision that you’re going to stop the cycle, and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
Talk to your creditors – hard, yes – but necessary. They WILL be sympathetic and will help you sort a realistic plan for paying off what you owe.
But you need to take that first step. Yes, it’s difficult. But you’ll feel so much better when you’ve done so. It’ll be like a weight’s been lifted from you. And you’ll feel your happiness flooding back…
