Being as many have jumped on the paleo bandwagon, a whole host of books on the subject have popped up. Some are good – some not so good. But the ones on our list are some of the very best out there. For anyone who wants to be truly clued up about the paleo lifestyle, you should definitely check out some of these…
1. Eat The Yolks – by Liz Wolf
In our humble opinion, this is one of the very best books out there about why our country is gripped by the illness and obesity epidemic it is today. In Eat The Yolks, Liz Wolf debunks the mis-guided beliefs that we’ve been fed by the nutrition industry (and it is an industry) for decades.
Myths such as ‘butter is bad for you’, and ‘whole grains are healthy’ are shattered – backed up, we hasten to add, with scientific proof. And guess what? The human body NEEDS such things as fat and cholesterol for optimum health!
This book is suitable for those who’ve already been converted, and for those who’re at the beginning of their paleo journey. Wolf’s writing style uses humor, interesting-facts, and well-documented proof to get her point across. As well as being educational, it also makes for a rip-roaring, highly entertaining read.
2. The New Primal Blueprint: Reprogram Your Genes for Effortless Weight Loss and Boundless Energy – by Mark Sisson
The New Primal Blueprint hasn’t sat at the top of the paleo chart for years without reason. In fact, the original publication back in 2009 was the catalyst for paleo living to start gaining acceptance as a mainstream diet. Well, we’ve come a long way from then, but this still remains one of the true ‘bibles’ when it comes to paleo.
As the name suggests, the book literally provides you with a blueprint as to how you can easily change your lifestyle and ‘reprogram your genes’ into the direction of health, happiness, and longevity.
3. It Starts With Food: Discover the Whole 30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways – by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig
The no-nonsense, It Starts With Food provides you with a complete blueprint of how to change your life forever, simply by altering your diet to encompass the whole paleo way of living.
Learn exactly why eating in the way of our ancestors can combat a whole range of illnesses and life-problems, such as insomnia, self-esteem, mood, and energy levels to achieve an all round better quality of life.
Sure, the initial 30 day eating plan is hard. It involves quitting all dairy, grain, legumes, sugar, and alcohol – and no-one is going to pretend this is a walk in the park. But by sticking to it for the first 30 days will change your whole relationship with food as you know it. And the health and well-being success stories from those who follow the diet are nothing short of incredible. Hardcore? Yes. But if you’re serious about paleo, then this is the go-to book for guaranteed results.
4. Practical Paleo: A Customized Approach to Health and a Whole Foods Lifestyle – by Diane Sanfilippo
Half a million people have already discovered the wisdom contained within the pages of Practical Paleo. Dubbed the ‘Paleo Bible’, it explains in easy to digest chunks exactly why eating correctly and avoiding refined and processed foods can have a remarkable effect on your health.
We particularly like the handy chapter on how you can introduce the paleo way into your lifestyle in an easy, step-by-step approach, rather than going cold turkey and eliminating all those hard-to-give-up foods in one fell swoop. If you were only looking to buy one book about paleo, then this would be the one to go for.
5. The Paleo Diet: Lose Weight and Get Healthy by Eating the Foods You Were Designed to Eat – by Loren Cordain
The Paleo Diet by one of the world’s experts on Paleolithic eating has been embraced the world over by those looking to lose weight and improve their health. The book takes the very latest in research as to why eating in this manner is fast becoming accepted by many as the answer to 21st century ill health and obesity.
As well as being informative and providing easy to understand information about why the paleo diet works, it also includes six weeks worth of meal plans and a ton of delicious recipes. A great all round book for everyone interested in improving their health and/or losing weight.
6. Primal Fat Burner: Live Longer, Slow Aging, Super Power Your Brain, and Save Your Life With a High Fat, Low Carb Paleo Diet – by Nora Gedgaudas
Primal Fat Burner gets to the core of why altering your metabolism from one that runs on sugar to one that runs on fat simply by changing the way you eat not only works for weight loss, but can be hugely advantageous for your health.
The great thing about this book is how effortlessly it explains not only the ‘why’ about paleo, but also ‘how’ you can easily incorporate it into your lifestyle. Add in the practical meal planner with recipes, and you’ve got a winning combination for a truly healthy lifestyle.
7. Paleo in 28: 4 Weeks, 5 Ingredients, 130 Recipes – by Kenzie Swanhart
For anyone who struggles to fit eating paleo into their crazy lifestyle, then Paleo in 28 should go straight to the top of your ‘must-read’ list. The ‘5 ingredients’ in the title aren’t quite as dull as it sounds, because the book also includes a few basic staples, bringing the total to somewhat more than 5. But the idea is sound (and it makes for a catchy title).
The best thing about this recipe book is that the meals are tasty, filling, and simple to create. And there’s no need to go searching for any hard to find ingredients. Everything is easily available in regular shops. A great book for anyone looking for a little inspiration in their paleo diet, but with no need to become a kitchen slave in order to do so.
8. Perfect Health Diet: Regain Health and Lose Weight by Eating the Way You Were Meant to Eat – by Paul Jaminet and Shou-Ching Jaminet
The Perfect Health Diet by these two Harvard Scientists provides you with a scientifically proven plan as to exactly what your body requires for optimal weight and health. If you’re slightly skeptical about paleo, then this research backed book is a great balance of information and science to prove to even the most hardened non-believer that paleo actually does what it promises.
The authors even give voice to the fact that, on occasion, certain foodstuffs that are normally a no-no in paleo can be eaten when done so appropriately (that’s why the book’s described as ‘paleo perfected’). If you like to understand the science behind the rules, then this is the book for you.
