There are so many productivity apps available for iPad – some good, some not so good, and some that really can be utilized to assist in your productivity. And it’s those ‘head and shoulders above the rest’ ones that we’re interested in. Whether you use them for work, your personal life, or a combination of both, the following are 7 of the very best productivity apps you should have on your iPad.
1. Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
OK, so these are technically two separate apps, but we’re going to put them together on this list being as they’re both, well, Microsoft… Thanks to Microsoft finally putting their might behind properly developing these for iOS, it means Apple fans no longer have to rely on a third party app to transfer their documents.
The Microsoft Word app allows you to start working on a document on your laptop or Mac, and continue on the go on your iPad or iPad Pro, with all changes seamlessly maintained across all your devices. It also works on iPhone and iPod touch. The core Word experience – meaning you can view, create, and edit documents is free on iPad, iPad Air, and iPad Mini. If you want to use it on the iPad Pro you need a qualifying Office 365 subscription.
For those that use spreadsheets, then having the Microsoft Excel app once again allows you to view, create, and edit on all your devices. In addition, the app comes with a special on screen formula keyboard to allow you to add numbers and formulas in a far easier manner than with a regular keyboard. Once again, while free on iPad, iPad Air, and iPad Mini, for the iPad Pro you’ll need a subscription to Office 365.
2. PDF Expert
For anyone who works with PDF documents, then having this paid for app on your iPad is a given… Whether you read, annotate, or edit these documents, PDF Expert gives you the power to do pretty much everything on the go. A desktop-class PDF reader, the app allows you to do all of the following:
- Highlight text
- Fill forms
- Create notes
- Draw with your finger
- Make bookmarks
- Review documents
- Sign documents
- Read PDFs with ease
- Copy files from Mac or PC via Wi-Fi and USB
- Save email attachments
- Save email files with various cloud services
- Share files with others
- Protect documents with password and encryption
- Text to speech
- Review mode
3. MyScript Calculator
There are loads of calculator apps for iPad, but this, in our humble opinion, is the best one available. And it’s free… MyScript Calculator allows you to handwrite numbers and mathematical symbols on the screen. It then converts them to digital text and carries out the equation. You can even simply scrub out a digit if you need to change something, rather than go to the bother of deleting it – the software does that for you.
No need for a keyboard, the calculator carries out all basic operations, plus the following:
- Powers, roots, exponentials
- Inverse trigonometry
4. Google Sheets and Google Docs
As much of the world is now ‘going Google’, the ability to collaborate with your work colleagues on shared Google documents whilst on the go is invaluable. Both Google Sheets and Google Docs are free apps for iPad.
Both allow you to work anywhere, any time, even without an Internet connection. You can also work on a document or spreadsheet at the same time as somebody else. There’s no need to worry about losing work, because everything is automatically saved as you type. You can also protect your work with a 4-digit passcode. And, happily, you can now open, edit, and save Microsoft Word documents and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets using the app too.
One of the biggest wastes of time in today’s digital world is trying to remember passwords. Password manager and secure wallet, 1Password, takes away the hassle – and keeps everything 100% secure as well.
We all know how important it is to have strong passwords, and this clever app ensures that yours are brought up to super strength. Sure, you have to enter all your passwords once (and that takes time), but after you’ve done that, the password generator changes them to something far stronger. Not only does it create strong and unique passwords, but it can also fill in all details such as names, credit card numbers, addresses, etc. to all supported websites.
Everything is kept fully encrypted and only you know the master password that protects the account. Touch ID allows you to unlock the app quickly, and you can organize all your passwords into different ‘vaults’ to keep the various areas of your life separate. Works seamlessly across all your devices and also has full support for team and family account.
Free for the first 30 days and then requires a paid-for subscription.
If you need to edit pictures on your iPad, then Pixelmator is for you. This paid for, full-featured, layer-based image editor lets you touch up images, enhance them, sketch, paint, and create advanced image compositions. This little baby has been designed exclusively for iOS and takes full advantage of the latest technology.
It also formats across all your devices, meaning you can pick up from your Mac and continue working on the go – and vice versa. It also works on your iPhone.
Features advanced photo editing, a full-featured painting app, graphic design, compatibility, iCloud and sharing.
7. Scanner Pro
Sometimes simply snapping a picture with your iPad camera isn’t good enough. For the times you need a proper document, only a scanned image will suffice. And that’s exactly what Scanner Pro does. This paid for app automatically detects borders and corrects distortion and geometry, converting any scan into a perfect PDF document. If you wish you can alter the crop area manually by simply tapping on the screen.
- Fast and easy scanning
- Advanced image processing
- Text recognition (21 different languages)
- Workflows + (send as an email, upload to Dropbox, save document to required folder)
- Share your scans (via email or 3rd party application)
- Upload to online storage
- iCloud sync across all your devices
- Protect with password
Edit, save, edit again (with all changes tracked and saved)
