Positive thinking is more effective than you might think. For every negative thought you have, you should always try to come up with five positive thoughts to counter the negative one.
When we are feeling down or discouraged, what we need to do first is change our mindset. Here are 15 thoughts to help you stay positive through even the toughest of times.
1. You are not defined by your past
Sometimes the things we have said or done previously really start to get under our skin. Whether we were in full control of negative things that once happened to us or not, it can be hard to shake the fear that something bad is going to happen to us again. Getting over your past is often a matter of attitude. Believe you can be a better person because of past events, and you will be able to stay more positive.
2. Things always get better
Things might look and feel pretty awful right now, which likely brings up a lot of negative thoughts and feelings. Just keep in mind that no matter how bad things might seem now, they always get better. Life is a series of hills and valleys. Whatever kind of valley you are in right now, there is something better waiting on the other side of it.
3. Tomorrow is a new day
So today did not go as you had originally planned. Does it ever? Maybe you said the wrong thing, or someone blamed you for something you didn’t do. Maybe you’re just having one of those days where every single thing that could have gone wrong, went wrong. Do what you need to do to get through today. Tomorrow is a new start.
4. No one else has permission to label you
It’s hard in our society not to pay attention to what other people think and say about us. Just know that no matter what someone else might say, their opinion of you does not define who you are. No one is allowed to label you except yourself.
5. What you are going through now will prepare you for your future
Life often puts us to the test, in a way. Sometimes we have to go through hard times in order to learn what we need to learn or to strengthen a weaker part of ourselves. At some point in the future, you are going to need that lesson or that strength. Focus on that and keep pushing through.
6. An ending is really just the beginning of a new chapter
It’s true that even good things have to come to an end. Just because you are facing an ending though does not mean it is actually the end. Every end is just the start of something new. Think of your life as a series of chapters; there is more to come.
7. If we always knew what was coming next, life would be too boring
Part of the joy of life is learning to embrace the unexpected. Sure, sometimes not knowing what is in store is scary. If we knew everything that was going to happen, though, there would be nothing left to anticipate or hope for.
8. You are not the only one going through this
Negative thoughts and hard times often make us feel lonely and misunderstood. Always remember that what you are facing, someone else has been through a version of it. You are not the only one, and you are going to be OK.
9. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
When weight lifters train, they are constantly testing themselves and putting pressure on their bodies and minds in order to become stronger. Life tests you in the same way. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it is unpleasant, but you will walk away from it stronger than you were before.
10. Not very many people get it right on the first try
Just because you did not succeed the first time does not mean you never will at all. Bouncing back from failure sometimes just means you keep trying even when you feel discouraged.
11. Everyone deals with setbacks and disappointments
Facing these kinds of things is honestly just part of the human experience. You are never going to get everything you want, but that is OK. Learning to handle it takes time, but it does get easier.
12. Change starts with you
If you do not like one of your worst habits, change it. If you want someone to treat you differently, alter the way you treat others. When the world changes, it is not because of one person. It is because of many individuals changing themselves.
13. You are the captain of your own life
You are strong and in control. You make your own decisions and you often know what is best for you. Other people do not control you, and if they try to, they are not worth keeping around.
14. There is always a lesson to be learned
Think about it: have you ever had a particularly bad experience that did not at least attempt to teach you something? We have to go through bad things because we have to learn the difference between right and wrong. We have to learn how to treat others and how best to behave. There is a lesson in every negative outcome; look for it. If it isn’t apparent now, it will be later.
15. Mistakes only teach you what you can do better next time
No one likes to admit they were wrong. Making a mistake is the root of many of our biggest social fears. We do not want to be blamed or looked down upon. Every mistake you have ever made, though, has shown you a personal shortcoming; something you either did not do well or did not do correctly. The next time a similar experience comes around, you will remember that mistake, but you will be much more likely to never make it twice.
Stay positive. Everything is going to work out.
