On occasion, it just takes the right few words to really bolster your self-image. The following are 10 of our favorites. Read. enjoy, and feel free to share…
Pounds (whether they’re related to weight or income) have absolutely no bearing on your real self-worth. Learning to measure yourself in the things that you’re good at will have a massive effect on your self-image. And hey, on the days when you’re really feeling down, painting on a smile is worth more than any amount of money (or weight loss). Try it – you’ll be amazed…
2. “A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.” – Mark Twain
Oh, Mr. Twain – you really did pen some words of wisdom. What this quote means is that YOU, and only you, have the power to affect how you view yourself. You give yourself the right to notice that you’re actually pretty great. Or you take away that right by only concentrating on your bad points.
So which choice do you think is the most advantageous…?
3. “Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
After all, who on earth wants to be the same as everyone else? Melting into the background certainly isn’t a recipe for real success – nor is it an ingredient to feel good about yourself. Be who you are; stand up for what you believe in; and most of all, remember that you have a unique mix of qualities that make you completely different from everyone else.
Now isn’t that a cool thought…!
4. “Self-care is never a selfish act – it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others.” – Parker Palmer
Oh yes, you really do owe it to you.inc to look out for number one. And don’t ever make the mistake of thinking that’s selfish – because what this quote is alluding to is the fact that if you’re not in the best state you can possibly be, how on earth can you offer anything to others?
Food for thought – especially for those out there who constantly put others first, but to the detriment of their own wellbeing.
5. “Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are.” – Malcolm S. Forbes
Ooh hoo hoo! This is a real humdinger of a quote… We’re almost hardwired to tune into our negatives rather than our positives. But why on earth do we do that? We don’t look at others in such a harsh manner, but when it comes to self-critique – boy are we destructive.
Now, while we need to understand our weaknesses in order to improve, what we really must do is recognize what we’re good at too. It’s a steep learning curve, but one that’s critical in climbing to improve our feelings of self-worth.
6. “To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance” -Oscar Wilde
He might have said some strange things, but this isn’t one of them – once you get to the crux of its meaning. YOU are the only person you spend every second of every day with – forever. And if you don’t like yourself, that can seem like a life sentence.
Learning to love oneself is vital for happiness – and in most cases, for success as well. Nurture the relationship you have with yourself – it’s the only one that’ll never leave you…
7. “Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” – William James
It’s all too easy to think that we matter not a jot. But if you can master the act of faking that you think your actions really do matter, you’ll be amazed at the repercussions.
In all honesty, what you do does make a difference. It’s just your view of it that thinks otherwise. But pretending that you think this way can have the strange effect of actually changing the way you think. Give it a go. Do it long enough and those ‘acting’ thoughts will soon become ones you truly believe.
8. “I think everybody’s weird. We should all celebrate our individuality and not be embarrassed or ashamed of it.” -Johnny Depp
There are many reasons to love Johnny Depp – and this quote just increases that love. Delightfully weird himself, he strikes a real chord about embracing your individuality. After all, that’s what makes you, you! And no-one in the world can tell you that your uniqueness is something to be ashamed or embarrassed about.
Go Johnny. You rock…!
9. “Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in one’s own sunshine.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
This is another self-image quote that gets to the heart of how destructive our thoughts can be. Failing to see the good stuff about yourself really does cast a shadow. Learning the art of constructive self criticism is key here. Because we need to be critical enough to strive for improvement, but not so critical of ourselves that we drown in the negativity.
10. “You were born an original work of art. Stay original.” ― Suzy Kassem
Oh yes, you certainly were – we all were. And then life gets to work on us, telling us we have to conform – wear the same clothes, like the same things, look a certain way… No, No, No – that so isn’t the case.
Once again we ask the question as to why folks are so keen to be the same as everyone else? Look around you. The happiest people, the most successful people, those most at peace with themselves – all of these are guys and girls who’ve stayed true to what they are. And you can too. You just need to give in to your natural attributes, wants and needs. Go on – give it a try. You’ll be amazed at how happy it makes you.
